Free Webinar on Veterans with Disabilities in the Workplace December 17th:
The Northeast ADA Center is presenting a free webinar, "Heroes at Work: Veterans with Disabilities in the Workplace", on Friday December 17th from 1:00-2:30pm EST. A key part of the military service-to-work transition for any veteran with a disability is to understand their legal rights as an employee with a disability. Likewise, employers should understand the unique issues in hiring and accommodating individuals with service-related disabilities. What's New in the Rest of the Country: 

Campaign for Disability Employment Launches New Outreach Tools:
The Campaign for Disability Employment, a collaborative of leading disability and business organizations funded by the Office of Disability Employment Policy, has released a series of new products designed to promote the hiring, retention, and advancement of people with disabilities and dispel negative stereotypes about disability and employment. Products include posters and discussion guides to accompany the Campaign's "I Can" public service announcement. Learn more about the free products at:  http://www.dol.gov/odep/

TSA Issues Letter to Disability Community Regarding Pat-Downs:
An open letter to members of the disability community from a top Transportation Security Administration (TSA) official says that some people with disabilities will be required to undergo "alternate screening techniques including pat-downs." As more airports utilize screening procedures that consist of full-body scanners instead of previously-used metal detectors, those who opt out of the machines or who trigger alarms are subject to intense pat-downs. Although some passengers believe that these procedures are too invasive, the TSA claims that some people with disabilities are ineligible for the body scanners and therefore must automatically undergo secondary screening measures.  Individuals who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices and cannot stand, travelers with service animals, people who rely on a cane or walker and those unable to lift their arms to shoulder level for several seconds as well as travelers assisting a person who cannot pass through the machines are all included in these measures. The TSA stands behind this procedure claiming that these are logical safety measures. Health Reform and Benefits for People with Disabilities Fact Sheet:
Healthcare.gov has posted an updated fact sheet on health reform and benefits for people with disabilities. "Affordable Care Act for Americans with Disabilities: A Brand New Day for Accessible, Affordable, Health Insurance and an Enhanced Commitment to Community Living" is a fact sheet that reflects recent policy guidance and provisions which have either just taken, or soon will take, effect:  http://www.healthcare.gov/news/factsheets/affordable_care_act_americans_disabilities.html

Veterans Hiring Online Toolkit for Employers Now Available:
The November issue of the Office of Disability Employment Policy's (ODEP) online newsletter, "Business Sense", promotes the new online Veterans Hiring Toolkit that was created by ODEP and its Veterans' Employment and Training Service. The toolkit is for employers who want to recruit and hire veterans but don't know how. It includes information about employer rights and responsibilities related to the employment and accommodation of veterans with disabilities. AMC Agrees To Revamp Seating for Moviegoers with Disabilities:
AMC Entertainment Inc., one of the nation's largest movie chains, will improve seating options for patrons with disabilities by moving seating for those who use wheelchairs and their companions from the front to the middle of theaters in nearly 250 existing properties with stadium seats. AMC also promises to continue this practice when building all new theaters. GettingHired.com Introduces New Employer Members:
GettingHired.com, a disability employment portal, announced the signings of 25 additional national employers.  GettingHired.com officials are very excited about these new employers joining the website as they work together to promote and increase the hiring of individuals with disabilities. New Chief of the FCC's Disability Rights Office (DRO) Named:
Gregory Hlibok, attorney for the Disability Rights Office in the Consumer and Government Affairs Bureau, has been named to head the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) DRO. As the first head of DRO who has a disability, he's taking the lead just as the FCC begins to implement the most significant disability law in 20 years. November Disability Employment Statistics:
In November, the percentage of people with disabilities in the labor force was 21.5 while the unemployment rate was 14.5 percent.  Read all the statistics at: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t06.htm

Registration for the 2011 National ADA Symposium Begins December 15th:
The annual ADA Symposium will be May 8-11, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Registration begins December 15th. The Symposium will consist of many breakout sessions, advanced sessions, and pre conference trainings and events. JAN Federal Employer Winter Webcast Series Begins in January:
The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) will offer three free Webcast sessions beginning in January for federal employers. The three part series will cover the hiring and employment of people with disabilities in the Federal government and the reasonable accommodation process, as well as address issues related to the ADA Amendments Act, the new Executive Order on hiring people with disabilities, and the implementation of Schedule A. This series would be most beneficial to federal disability program managers, hiring managers, supervisors, EEO representatives, selective placement coordinators, and others who may be involved in hiring and managing workers in the Federal government. Call for Proposals for Annual Conference on Independent Living (IL):
The National Council on Independent Living seeks workshop proposals for their 2011 Annual Conference, "Keeping Our Eyes on the Prize", which will be July 13-16, 2011 in Washington, D.C. Topic suggestions for proposals include achieving independence for the IL program; learning and advancing the IL philosophy; best practices and innovation in core services; recognizing and improving inclusion and cultural competence; and addressing conference attendees' requests for workshops. Special Spotlight: International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

On December 3rd, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities was celebrated. This annual observance was established by the International Year for Disabled Persons (1981). The Day aims to promote a better understanding of disability issues with a focus on the rights of persons with disabilities and gains to be derived from their inclusion in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities.
